is a function of the notification subsystem itself (how long the notification will be
available/queued) and not the producer of the notification who has context how long the
notification makes sense?

I am not advocating for TTL, but I think it needs to be considered if follow the current
design, which is based on polling.
We do probably end up with completely different design if we design for real
notifications
that make use of asynchronous callbacks.
