However... Java Serialization needs a writeObject and readObject to be private otherwise it would just ignore the method. (I have checked that by writing few testcases). Looking at the diff that generated this, Gaving was using writeObject without the private declaration. Maybe the field was being sent over Java Serialization and that's why he got some problems. (I don't know.. just guessing).
