In further experimenting it has nothing to do with special characters as I can name the
host without special characters. It just cannot do a cd host=hostname whenever the host
is not a domain controller. I named my domain controller similarly and it had no trouble
doing a cd into that host.

I cannot access a host with the CLI object from scriptsupport package when the host name
contains an underscore ("_"). Regular names work fine.
