log4j-appender seems not working in jboss-logging (AS6 final)

We are using some custom logger based on log4j appenders. I made a jboss-logging.xml
configuration but it seems that my log4j-appender doesn't log anything. I'm
working in AS6 final version.
I made an example with a standard log4j appender (neither working). The category
"com.sample" should be managed by the log4jappender. Every second the bean
should write something, but nothing happens, the log file is not even created. I tried
with other log4j loggers/ custom loggers and no success.
When activating CONSOLE handler the logs are correctly written in console, but when only
using the log4j-appender nothing happens after server started.
The configuration file seems correct (?), but can't unfortunately check it against a
documentation yet.

The problem stems from the fact that some errors in logging configuration are logged after
the boot logging has already been disabled.
You may be able to get more information about the problem by keeping boot logging running
even after the logging deployer starts up. To keep boot logging running, edit the file:
server/default/deployers/jboss-logging.deployer/META-INF/logmanager-jboss-beans.xml
(or server/all if you're using the all configuration, etc.) and change the line which
reads:
<bean name="JBossLogService"
class="org.jboss.logmanager.LogService" mode="On Demand"/>
to instead read:
<bean name="JBossLogService" class="java.lang.Object"
mode="On Demand"/>
That should disable the boot logging and let you see the relevant stack trace(s).

I unfortunately didn't get any further information by changing the jboss-logging
deployer. But when debugging a bit more and reading some other topics on the user forum, I
saw that the Layout of my appender was not set, which is the cause that my logs didn't
appear and weren't append in the logger. I programmatically set one, and the logs were
written as expected. So now the question is, why my appender didn't get a Layout. Is
there something wrong/missing in my configuration?
BTW when checking the jboss-logging deployer I think there is a typo in the name of a bean
: JBossLog4jRepostiorySelector . Could this have an incidence?

Other thing, I tried to setup the SmtpAppender and I see that the ActivateOptions()
method is never called, making the appender not correctly initialized. This is probably
another problem for the Log4jAppenders.

We are using some custom logger based on log4j appenders. I made a jboss-logging.xml
configuration but it seems that my log4j-appender doesn't log anything. I'm
working in AS6 final version.
I made an example with a standard log4j appender (neither working). The category
"com.sample" should be managed by the log4jappender. Every second the bean
should write something, but nothing happens, the log file is not even created. I tried
with other log4j loggers/ custom loggers and no success.
When activating CONSOLE handler the logs are correctly written in console, but when only
using the log4j-appender nothing happens after server started.
The configuration file seems correct (?), but can't unfortunately check it against a
documentation yet.

Great, It's getting much better now. I tried the following log4j appenders:
* SmtpAppender --> Successful
* DailyRollingFileAppender --> Successful
* A custom logger (extending AppenderSkeleton) --> Successful after using another logj4
Layout than this used by jboss-logging (Nullpointer in the FormatterLayout, but could not
yet debug it as I didn't found the source code) , but maybe something has to change in
our implementation of our appender...
Just one thing, I don't know if has something to do with the fix bu the STDOUT are now
shown twice in console, except if I remove the CONSOLE handler.

To make log4j-appender work, Gregoire help to find the patch path:
1. download and unzip AS6.
2. upgrade log4j.jar to 1.2.16
3. apply patch JBAS-8791-1.zip. (3 jars into 3 different directories, replace old same
name jars)
4. change the jboss-logging.xml, add Log4jAppender appender

which is 1.2.14 in the distribution) to 1.2.16. This is a change I made 2 or 3 weeks ago,

The mytest.log file could be created but it is always empty.
Could you help me to reproduce your successful steps in a new empty
directory? (unzip JBoss AS6, apply patch, modify logging.xml file, and
deploy ejb jar)
And if ok too, please send the logging.xml and ejb file to me.

I confirm that it works.
But the customer appenders start working just after all the server has started, loosing
all the startup logs entries.
In jboss 5.x they start immediatly and I think that it's correct.
It would be also good to place the jboss-logging_6_0.xsd in doc/schemas.

We are using some custom logger based on log4j appenders. I made a jboss-logging.xml
configuration but it seems that my log4j-appender doesn't log anything. I'm
working in AS6 final version.
I made an example with a standard log4j appender (neither working). The category
"com.sample" should be managed by the log4jappender. Every second the bean
should write something, but nothing happens, the log file is not even created. I tried
with other log4j loggers/ custom loggers and no success.
When activating CONSOLE handler the logs are correctly written in console, but when only
using the log4j-appender nothing happens after server started.
The configuration file seems correct (?), but can't unfortunately check it against a
documentation yet.

r111767 commit upgraded log4j to 1.2.16 version (along with other logging fixes) and that
should fix this issue. To test the fix, the nightly builds are available here

We are using some custom logger based on log4j appenders. I made a jboss-logging.xml
configuration but it seems that my log4j-appender doesn't log anything. I'm
working in AS6 final version.
I made an example with a standard log4j appender (neither working). The category
"com.sample" should be managed by the log4jappender. Every second the bean
should write something, but nothing happens, the log file is not even created. I tried
with other log4j loggers/ custom loggers and no success.
When activating CONSOLE handler the logs are correctly written in console, but when only
using the log4j-appender nothing happens after server started.
The configuration file seems correct (?), but can't unfortunately check it against a
documentation yet.

It seems that distribution of 6.1.0 doesn't include jars, attached to this issue.
Using of SMTPAppender recursively produces
{noformat}
ERROR [STDERR] log4j:ERROR Message object not configured.
{noformat}
with {{StackOverflowError}} at the end. The reason is that {{activateOptions()}} of
appender is not called.
The problem disappears when jars in distribution of 6.1.0 are replaced with jars, attached
to the issue.

The patch partly fixed problem.
If this patch wasn't fully applied, without adding jboss-logmanager.jar, it prones to
works log4j loggers and appenders. But many stack trace falls in console about class not
found LogManager.
Also I turned off JBoss beans for logging in
..\deployers\jboss-logging.deployer\META-INF\logmanager-jboss-beans.xml.

I was able to fix the problem by applying the patched logging-service-metadata.jar
contained in the attachment to my JBoss 6.1.0 installation. The changes in
jboss-logmanager-log4j.jar and jboss-logmanager.jar are already included in JBoss 6.1.0.
