Feedback for jBPM5 proposal
by Sebastian Schneider
Hello everybody,
as requested by Kris I am reposting my feedback on the mailing list:
1.) Will jBPM 5.0 be based upon jBPM 4.x? You mention the PVM and the
native BPMN 2.0-implementation. So I assume it will be. Am I right?
2.) What's the reason for replacing the task management with WS-Human
Task? The task life cycle model? Will this be implemented as a
webservice as most of the other vendors do or will you supply a java
implementation using the same model? You are stating that the engine
will continue to be embeddable so I hope this will be a java
implementation of the task life cycle model.
3.) Will JBoss ESB be an optional component? I am thinking of
embeddability again. Why use an ESB when you don't need one? One of the
strengths of jBPM IMHO is the small footprint.
4.) IMHO it's absolutely crucial to fix some really basic issues
concerning jBPM 4.3 and release 4.4. This is important to not lose the
community. There's also a great insecurity about jBPM 4.x. To be more
precise: whether or not you should start a project wiht jBPM 4.3 right
now. Wide usage by the community is the best test you can get for a
software product.
In general the overall looks nice but there should be priority on the
core engine since all the other components can still be added later on
with no problem.
P.S.: For those who don't know what I am talking about:

Cheers and have a nice weekend

jBPM4 and jBPM5
by Simon Zhang
The announcement of jBPM5 is an exciting news that we have been waiting for since March 30th. Thanks to sharing this with us.
Here are our comments as a development team that loves and are intensively using jBPM.
1. Regarding jBPM4, as many others already mentioned, it is not clear about its fate. We have invested a lot effort to develop a new platform for our own usage that relying on jBPM4 since last year, and have been anxiously waiting for jBPM4.4 release as it contains a lot of bug fixes that we ran into during our usage. Our company is a RedHat customer and a partner, we even used RedHat support contract to seek support on jBPM. In a simple word, We hope jBPM team will continue to fix these bugs to make jBPM4 stable. BTW, Currently we are still using jPDL4, so stop supporting BPMN2 features in jBPM4 won't bother us.
2. As we have invested on both jBPM and drools, with jBPM and rule flow combined plus BPMN2, jBPM5 is an ideal product we are looking forward to. We are eager to know its delivery timeline.
3. We have noticed before the conflict between jBPM team and drools team in jBoss. Hope this time the cooperation among these two will be smooth. Even though the founder of jBPM left, we still hope the new jBPM team will inherit his legacy well and bring the best of jBPM4 to jBPM5. I believe jBPM team has made this promise, just want to state our comments over here.

Hi guys,
I am not familiar with the drools flow. There is free person using even talking about it. Is there a PVM in drools flow, too? Will the jBPM5 based the PVM of jBPM 4, or jBPM5 will be re-written from drools flow?
If jboss won't support jBPM4, could we make a community branchs of jBPM4 and go on fixing bugs? The licence of jBPM4 is LGPL, If someboy modify the source code, they have to let these codes be opened. But it is not clear for make a branches. Does red hat allow to make a community version?

Hi Chris,
I'm agree with Sebastian on the supporting jBPM 4.x part. The orginal plan of jBPM 4.4 was Match 1st, 2010. Today is April 17th, there are still a lot of issue didn't fixed in the JIRA. Could we at least make a plan for jBPM 4.4 releasing? We needn't provide all of new feature in the JIRA, only fix the known issues is very appreciated.
Please think about it, Thanks.
