This change (which I really like, btw) breaks the current ldap connector code, and
possibly other standard connectors as well. Should there be a separate sub-task to track
updating of the standard connectors to handle this change?

Returning the metadata id forces the developer to keep track of the runtime metadata
object, when it would be much simpler to return the metadataobject instead.
