It looks like getObject may return a SQLXML value from oracle - if a later rev of the 11.2
driver is used (11.2.0.1 does not work), the xdb6.jar is in the classpath, and from

system property setting -Doracle.jdbc.getObjectReturnsXMLType="false"

return an OPAQUE instance rather than a SQLXML value.
