We require user-specific connections to our backend datasources. We pass user credentials
to the translators using the payload but the payload is not available in the
getConnection(Factory f) method. I propose adding public getConnection(Factory f,

Another approach: place the payload on a thread local to let the data source (ie Factory
type) access to it. this provides for semi-neat separation of concerns

The original intention was this is always going to be JCA and behind the connection pool.
If we provide payload then we also need to place the Subject on the API too.

Is there a target release for this? Right now, we create a lazily initialized connection
in the getConnection method hoping that the createExecution method is called before the
connection is used. Seems to work but it's a bit messy and requires us to create a
new translator class. I suspect there is something we could do using the new delegating
translator to make it a little less messy.

I would target this for 7.5. Putting the ExecutionContext in a threadlocal or adding a
new getConnection signature would be easy enough. Any time there is not an associated
query the context would be null. Currently this would only happen with dynamic vdb
metadata loading.
Another approach since you are customizing the translator anyway would be to have
getConnection return null (assuming that you don't need dynamic vdb functionality) and
then take responsibility for connection management in the Execution.

Resolution: Done
Added the getConnection(F factory, ExecutionContext executionContext) method, and
deprecated the getConnection(F factory) method.
This was worked in 7.4.1 since it allows for MMX style functionality of using the
execution payload (which can be used to emulate the old trusted payload) to customize
getting a connection.
