One possible approach that would even maintain backward serialized compatibility without
too much head ache would be to use negative int values to indicate float values. There
would be a loss of precision, but the range would be much greater. Otherwise we'd
have to look at using longs. Either way surrounding logic needs to be changed
appropriately.
