There's no object to synchronize against: SessionBasedClusteredSession doesn synchronization against itself: public void writeExternal(ObjectOutput out) throws IOException { synchronized (this) { ... } } but application developers see the wrapped one (instance of StandardSessionFacade), so synchronizing against session object does not prevent from concurrency errors
