Tim, numberOfRetries used to control the number of times MicroSocketClientInvoker tried to
get a pooled socket. This loop was replaced by the semaphore based code you kindly
donated, in particular:
boolean timedout = !semaphore.attempt(timeToWait);
and so numberOfRetries is no longer used.

I reopened this issue so that it doesn't fall through the cracks, but I suppose there
