When starting JBoss server in standalone configuration we have 100% CPU usage.
There are no deployments.

Why do you think this is a bug? Is the server taking an exceptionally long time to start?
The server tries to start as fast as possible, we do not try and limit CPU usage to make
it start slower.

-XX:+UseCompressedOops -Xms1g -Xmx2g -XX:PermSize=256m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m
-XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+UseLargePages
you use -XX:+UseCompressedOops and -XX:+UseLargePages it would say something is wrong with
the way you view what parameters are needed.
first one tells jvm to compress all pointers so it would use less memory overhead for
small heaps, second tells jvm to use Large memory
and to use second parameter properly you need to configure kernel to enable it. Also your
log file (boot.log)

i have also removed PermSize* params for start as you do not need as big permgens unless

I received some feedback from the operation team and they installed a Redhat 5 OS on a
single-core CPU VM => CPU usage goes down after startup.
It seems related to RedHat 6 and the single-core CPU setup. Actually, when running on a
multi-core machine (having 24 "core threads") with RedHat 6 Os in place, JBoss
is running well (that's because the CPU usage is "masked").

I have lots of jboss 7 servers running on vmware (vshpere 4.1 and 5.0) with virtual
mashines having 1 cpu and 2-4gb of ram.

How does your vmware host look like? It might be that host is overcommited, and cpu load
you see is 100% of virtual machine but can be just like 50mhz on host...

Hmm interesting, the thread dump you included shows waiting, nothing that should be
consuming major cpu cycles.
I see you are running the full config. Out of curiosity can you try launching with the
stock standalone.xml from the distribution. That would eliminate some of the variables.

Hi Tomaz, I checked with our system admin and he sees the JBOSS is killing the VMware
system with the load it is generating. This is JBOSS without any deployments. We installed
JBOSS 5 and the cpu load is like 1-5% only versus 95% on JBOSS 7. Same environment. Let us

It depends on what profiler you have, there is no built in one.
Personally I like YJP (www.yourkit.com)
There is also JProfiler and a free eclipse one.
This just seems really odd. That thread dump you gave us does not have any threads doing
anything that would use CPU. Another option would be to take lots of thread dumps, and see
if any of them have threads that are actually doing some work.
