Is there any progress / status on this bug? I have voted and "watched" it in JIRA, but haven't seen any comments or work yet. Is it confirmed that this is a bug and not a configuration issue? (Any other configuration tips to try to work around it?) Any chance of getting the bug onto the road map for a possible future fix version? It seems like it is pretty major and might be affecting many users (although they may not know about the specific JIRA bug to vote/watch it). Brian, I found the answer in IdentityLock jboss cache class: 1- If the transaction already has a read lock on the entity (which is acquired by an EntityManager.find() ) the read lock will be INMEDIATELY upgraded to write lock, EVEN if there's a concurrent transaction which already has a read lock on the same entity. 2- If the transaction performs a EntityManager.createNamedQuery(), then it does not have any read locks on any of the entities returned by the query, so if the transaction writes to an entity which is read locked by another concurrent transaction, then the write lock will block till the transaction with the read lock on that entity commits. Point 2 is what is described in the hibernate doc. But I think point 1 is confusing, don't know if a bug. Yes, the stack trace contains the indication (methd name and line number) where exception occur on application's code. But sometimes the app use/refer more than one DS and JBoss AS admin. doesn't have access to code to verify what DS the app refer to. Would be very interesting if by default ConnectionManager could print resource name on stack trace. I production env this functionality would be very useful for admins. Wait, I think I actually get it. You're saying that since the value of the actorId is pretty much disconnected from reality, I can use any arbitrary string as the actorId, which would mean using the group name. And as long as I can figure out what the group name is when assigning AND when querying, I can do it however I like. When you were saying "group" I was thinking JBPM identity group, not my-own-custom-group. Sorry for being thick headed about this. In my defense, I've been on pain medication :) Thanks for the help. Is there more to the stack trace? Somewhere in the stack trace should be some of your code, what datasource was that code attempting to get? You could try setting the log level to trace for org.jboss.resource.connectionmanager, some of htose classes have trace-level logging. ANY decent I&AM solution has a way to decide which groups a user belong to.... as mentioned multiple times in this topic and other ones... for the engine any string you put in the pooled actors is just a string.... without meaning. You give the meaning to it yourself.
