Alternatively you can create your custom/domain specific nodes and coresponding work item handlers which you could do pretty much whatever you need. Take a look at http://docs.jboss.org/jbpm/v5.3/userguide/ch.domain-specific-processes.html documentation for more details and jbpm-examples project that is shipped with jbpm distribution.
