This has nothing to do with selling support. The starterkit is the starterkit, completely preconfigured and ready to run AS IS. If you want to run jBPM on other appservers, look at the source. There are ant targets there for creating 'binaries' for other versions. Compatibility between 3.1 and 3.x releases IS guaranteed with the help of update scripts etc...
