I am not able to reproduce the exact issue in this build,
http://portal.demo.jboss.com/portal/default but I can definitely see related issues.
Essentially, this is the problem:
* Add a portlet on the page.
* Maximize it, restore it, minimize it, and keep doing this a few times, and at some
point, the portlet disappears for the user and cannot ever be restored (unless the portlet
is chosen to be added again, and even in that case, it fails occasionally).
After doing a fair bit of testing, I've narrowed down the test case to the following:
* This does NOT reproduce in Firefox and happens only in IE
* Even in IE, it happens ONLY when clicking on the maximize/minimize/restore events DOES
NOT work the first time.
I am able to see the exact the same issue in the
http://portal.demo.jboss.com/portal/default build in IE. The portlet events do not work
unless repetitively tried, and in our case, the portlet disappears exactly at that point.
In other words, when the portlet event does not get kicked off the first time when the
portlet is in the maximized mode, the portlet ends up disappearing when we repeatedly
click on that event (be it minimize or restore).
It is a little painful to reproduce this but the problem does exist in IE.

It is the maximize/minimize/restore event. One of them.. I wish I could have been more
specific but the problem is quite intermittent and it is hard to nail down on the simplest
reproducible test case..

I played again hard on the demo box, with IE 7.0.6000.16546 without experiening anything
odd.
I added a portlet on the default page and hit the maximize/minimize/normal buttons for a
while. Nothing.

Sorry, I couldn't get to this in the last couple of weeks. Let me try to come up with
a standalone, reproducible test case, which is going to be a bit tricky especially since
this only happens in IE (multiple versions) and is perfectly stable in Firefox.

I still can't come up with a standalone test-case but we see consistently in IE, and
this is exactly when it happens:
* Maximize the portlet.
* If it works, then all is well.
* If it doesn't work the first time and you ended up clicking more than once, this is
what causes the problem. The maximize ends up happening but when you minimize again, the
portlet disappears.
This is a showstopper for us, so any help would be highly appreciated. Note that this
doesn't ever happen on Firefox.

On further debugging, I've narrowed down this test case further.
In IE, when I click on the maximize/minimize event, it always works if I open it in a new
tab (which is ofcourse not a solution or even a workaround) but when I simply click on the
icon, I see that the portlet shrinks a wee bit (this does NOT happen in firefox), and the
HTTP request is not even made. When I release the mouse button, it expands (by the 2% or
so that it shrunk) and nothing happens. I keep trying this till it works and at that
point, it does get maximized except that it will disappear when it is either restored or
minimized from that point on.
Why is there a difference in behavior and particularly, why does it shrink a wee bit in
IE? Is there a way I can turn that off?
Also, if the portlet disappears, how can I render it again? Worst case scenario, even if
it requires database updates (to be done by the admin), it is okay. The way we have it
now, there is literally no way to get it back. Thanks for your help..

and that is probably why the problem doesn't occur.
To explain what I mean by it "shrinks" - it is basically similar to the UI look
and feel when you attempt to move these portlets.

okay, the problem is tied to this single line of code in the jsp:
<p:region regionName='AJAXFooter' regionID='AJAXFooter'/>

If I comment this line out, there are no issues but, ofcourse, I CANNOT move the portlets
around on the page (across regions, that is).
If I uncomment it, I can move the portlets but that causes the "shrinking" issue

Okay, I see the "shrinking" behavior in the
http://portal.demo.jboss.com/auth/dashboard/default build online, and the behavior is
certainly different from what I see in Firefox. When I click on either the
minimize/maximize icon but hold the mouse button, I see that the portlet shrinks in size a
wee bit and when I release the button, the event doesn't ever get triggered. In
firefox though, after I release the button (regardless of how long I hold it), the event
does get triggered.
Now, how this is tied to the disappearing portlet, I am yet to be able to prove but they
are undoubtedly related in my case as commenting out the above line (AJAXFooter) and doing
this, doesn't ever cause a problem..

Let me check my version of IE (7.0, but will find out the more specific version as i
don't know if i installed any upgrades etc.) when I get to work next week (on vacation
now) but a number of my colleagues have run into this issue as well. So, hopefully, it is
tied to the same version but for some reason, I am not so sure... I'll check though.

I've experienced something similar. It appears to me that the issue is related to the
handling of events in IE. Frequently, but not consistently, when one clicks on the
minimize (or maximize, etc) buttons in the portlet header, the action is associated with
the drag event and not the specific button.
This never seems to happen in FireFox. I just experimented on the JBoss demo site and can
reproduce the problem. We've tested with both IE 6 and 7 and it happens in both.
Since we have big IE customer base this is a BIG problem for us.
I wonder if there is overlap between the DaD region and the buttons and whether separation
of these would solve the problem in IE?

What is also intriguing is why it disappears for a certain user and not for others? And,
even if I delete the user and re-create it, the problem still exists (perhaps, the
deletion was not clean/complete and there are some remnants of the old user)?

This is because the portlet mode buttons are inside the draggable div. IE handles the
z-index differently on this and activates the onclick drag instead of maximizing or
changing the portlet mode.
My only problem now is trying to make the change and coexist with current markup. It is in
progress.

I am not able to reproduce the exact issue in this build,
http://portal.demo.jboss.com/portal/default but I can definitely see related issues.
Essentially, this is the problem:
* Add a portlet on the page.
* Maximize it, restore it, minimize it, and keep doing this a few times, and at some
point, the portlet disappears for the user and cannot ever be restored (unless the portlet
is chosen to be added again, and even in that case, it fails occasionally).
After doing a fair bit of testing, I've narrowed down the test case to the
following:
* This does NOT reproduce in Firefox and happens only in IE
* Even in IE, it happens ONLY when clicking on the maximize/minimize/restore events DOES
NOT work the first time.
I am able to see the exact the same issue in the
http://portal.demo.jboss.com/portal/default build in IE. The portlet events do not work
unless repetitively tried, and in our case, the portlet disappears exactly at that point.
In other words, when the portlet event does not get kicked off the first time when the
portlet is in the maximized mode, the portlet ends up disappearing when we repeatedly
click on that event (be it minimize or restore).
It is a little painful to reproduce this but the problem does exist in IE.
