I'm getting an exception while asserting objects into the working memory. Depending
on the timing, I get different stacktraces leading up the same exception on the same
generated class. I have 15 rules and three types of objects in the working memory. 2500
User objects, 37 Milestone objects, and 2000 RLI objects. If I assert all the Users and
Milestones first, I get the first exception below during assertion of the RLI objects, at
the 257th object asserted. If I arrange to skip that particular record, I can assert a
few more before another record trips the bug. If I put a try/catch block around the
assertion and continue after hitting an exception, I can assert about 1600 of the records
successfully, and the others reliably throw (ie. if I try to assert them later). If I
assert RLIs first, I get the second stacktrace during assertion of Milestones. Looks like
the problem happens during execution of one or more rules. I'll attach the RLI class,
and its parent class (which is also the parent of the other two classes).

Because none of the RHS actions in my rules are taking place, I think that all the RLIs
that throw this error are ones that match rules.

I'm getting an exception while asserting objects into the working memory. Depending
on the timing, I get different stacktraces leading up the same exception on the same
generated class. I have 15 rules and three types of objects in the working memory. 2500
User objects, 37 Milestone objects, and 2000 RLI objects. If I assert all the Users and
Milestones first, I get the first exception below during assertion of the RLI objects, at
the 257th object asserted. If I arrange to skip that particular record, I can assert a
few more before another record trips the bug. If I put a try/catch block around the

It looks like the problem isn't solved. I no longer get the
IncompatibleClassChangeError, but now my application pegs a CPU and hangs (using 100% CPU)
after asserting 200+ records (at the same place, in other words).

I got more information on the hanging problem. I did a series of stack dumps (kill -3) of
the running process, and extracted the traces of the relevant thread. The attached file
(stacktraces.txt) has the various different states of the thread. These 8 traces are
culled from about 20 dumps, in which each state was repeated a few times. In other words,
it's stuck in a long loop.
Hopefully this will make it easier to find the problem.

Dirk, it took me some time to realize something, but I think I may know what is happening.
Unfortunatelly, it is not something "easy" to solve.
First, let me explain what a ShadowFact is:
It is a copy of every fact you assert into working memory, in a way we can control the
changes done to the fact state and only apply it at safe points. An analogy that can be
made is with transactions: when inside a transaction (database for instance) you can
modify all the data, but it only becomes visible to the world after a commit.
We implement Shadow Facts through a proxy.
Problem is: how to calculate hashcodes and determine equality between 2 facts if we
don't know (like in databases) what is the primary key? We can't delegate the
calls to the real instance, because it would be calculating hashcode/equals over not
commited values. So, we need to intercept and calculate that ourselves.
Right now, what hashcode does is calculate the value based on all attributes values and
equals compare attribute by attribute until either it finds one that is different or all
are equal.
This strategy usually works well, except that the class you sent me as an example has a
ton of fields. I think what is happening is that it is taking it a long time to calculate
hashes and equals during the fact propagation.
Hashcode is simple to cache and will propably improve performance considerably, even using
full attributes calculation, but equals() is an incognite to me... I don't have an
answer right now on how to deal with equals, besides finding a way to "inspect"
the bytecode of the original class to infer what is being done in there and doing a
similar thing in the proxy class... I will take a look in that and see if I can do
something like that using ASM.

It happens that all of my classes have an "id" attribute, which is
their record number in the external datasource. They also have the
"lastModified" time from the datasource. This means that "equals" is
(potentially) very simple: the "primary key" is id + lastModified.
Given that I know how to define "equals", and that I know that I'm
going to be shoving my class into a rules engine, I'm perfectly
willing to give the rules engine whatever help it needs. I have *no*
"religion" about pojos, I'm happy to add methods or fields to my
classes to help Drools -- the entire class is written for use in
Drools.
The simplest thing might be to have a public static final String[]
that lists the fields used to define equality and hashcode. That
would save Drools the trouble of digging around with ASM trying to
figure out what's going on. It should be fairly easy to document the
situations where the use of this is appropriate and/or necessary.
That way users could decide what to do, and the ones who insist on
pojos can take their chances.
I prefer something explicit that works, rather than something implicit
and tricky that sometimes fails in strange ways deep in the guts of a
library.

I have what might be an even better idea...
Seems to me that the fields of a given shadow proxy object will never
change. If that's true, then shadows don't need to calculate their
hashcode, they can simply use a cached value. That value can be
aquired by calling hashCode() on the original object at the time that
the rest of the shadow fields are populated. This would have the
added benefit of making shadow.hashCode() very fast.
Unfortunately, this doesn't help as much with equals(). It does make
it easy to fail-fast -- if the hashcodes are different, the objects
are not equal.

Yes, we are discussing that and also discussing options of shadowing just the fields
actually used in the rules... still have some problems to clarify though, like what to do
if one dinamically adds a rule to the rule base which uses different fields....

I'm getting an exception while asserting objects into the working memory. Depending
on the timing, I get different stacktraces leading up the same exception on the same
generated class. I have 15 rules and three types of objects in the working memory. 2500

The file more-stacktraces.txt has traces taken while my app was hung trying to assert an
object.
The object being asserted is a PRRecord, #938 of 10,500. I don't know
why it hung on the 938th object; if I run it multiple times, it hangs
on different objects, and sometimes in different threads (while
asserting a different class of object). These stacktraces were taken
over a 40 minute period, during which the jvm was fully utilizing a
CPU, and no progress was made (ie. it never finished asserting the
object).
The rule that shows up in the traces is:

You are using the "collect" CE!!! :) This is the cause of your apparent
"hang".
Problem is that accumulate/collect are very heavy CE's and you need to be carefull
when using them.
Being brief, using the following rule:
rule "Find all PRs for user"

collect( PRRecord( $resp : responsible -> ( $user.hasReport($resp) ) ) )

$user.setRecords($pr_list, DataSource.GNATS);

if you already have "User" facts asserted into the working memory, it means that
for every PRRecord that matches your <constraints>, it will recalculate the
"collect". So, if you have a User fact, and assert a PRRecord, it will create a
RecordSet and add your PRRecord to the set. When you assert a second PRRecord, it will
create a new RecordSet and add the 2 PRRecord. As you see, it is a progression:
1+2+3+4...+N.
Your case is even worst because your constraint is a predicate (not indexable right now),
so, it means the progression above is executed in full.
It seems a simple thing to "optimize", but it is not. Although we need to do it
soon, possibly before final.
Anyway, what you need to do:
1) If possible, adjust your business model in a way to replace the predicate for a regular
"==" constraint, avoiding full iteration because of indexing.
2) Use a control fact to limit the partial matches. Example:
rule "Find all PRs for user"

$control : ControlFact( phase == "findPR" )

It seems ugly at first, but it is a technique that unfortunately needs to be used in
some special cases.
