Personally I would solve the usecase u seem to have (I think) is put timers on transitions. Sorry? For JPA: I don't see a big technical imporvement by using JPA instead of Hibernate directly. The implementation is the same. Using JPA just removes the dependency of non-standard Hibernate. And if this is required in a project, it normally is a political issue, not a technical. Hopefully that was more clear now...
