Thanks Weston for the clues, much appreciated. I had tried the patch for SQL Server bug but it didnt work. I removed, reinstalled SQL Server repalied patch etc - nothing worked. I should also mention that I am using SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition. Anyway then tried 'jtds' and it seems to work without a problem. so yeah eventually I got it working.
