You can override update()/delete() to accept an entity bean.

  |    @Override
  |    public String update(WorkShift workShift)
  |    {
  |       setInstance(workShift);
  |       return super.update();
  |    }
  | 

You will then have:
#{workShiftHome.update(ws)}
