Here's a reason to keep older GA and SP versions handy: there are people who use older versions in production. They may need to replicate problems or debug, so they may need a fresh release or source bundle of the exact version they're running. Instead of forcing them to clutter their own environments with "archive" directories, it'll be a lot easier to just offer them in a centralized download repository.
