After adding <core:microcontainer installed="@microcontainer@"/> to the components.xml file I was able to debug the other missing configuration settings. Chances are <core:microcontainer /> would have worked as well but since I wanted to set the installed attribute via the build.xml file I opted to for a slightly different setup.
