I can see no way that changing the context root in application.xml, by itself, could possibly have that effect. I cannot reproduce it doing this: build/deploy messages to jboss test application change context-root in application.xml build/deploy to jboss test application I would recommend carefully looking at your lib and deploy directories to see if there is anything unusual there. And, if you didn't do it early, please wipe out your tmp and data directories when you do a clean restart just to make sure there isn't something weird happening there.
