Looking at the DTD (it is in the source at
core/src/resources/dtd/portlet-instances_2_0.dtd) there does not appear to be an <
if-exists >overwrite< /if-exists > node, like there is for the *-object.xml file.
 So my guess is that there is no way to override the preferences.
