JBoss in Action contains 10 pages on defining a custom portal, and that is after 40-some pages describing various topics that you need to know to do a portal. There is no way I can summarize that here (and if I tried it would contain less information that what is in the slides). I recommend looking over the custom portal section in JBoss in Action and looking at the source code provided with the book.
