I downloaded the bundled version from:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/jboss/jboss-portal-2.4.0-bundled.zip?d...
then did the same as you did with the only difference being chmod +x run.sh... 
Can remove the log, tmp and data directories in the server/default/ directory and try
again, then send me the server.log file, please?
