I'm going to work through this documentation: http://www.jboss.com/products/jbpm/docs/deployment To see if the other deployment options work. On the suggestion of a friend I found some more syntax errors (still figuring out how to implement the mail actions using templates) which didn't cause any change in error messages. I also used windows task manager to see if I was running multiple servers and therefore deploying successfully to the one which was not being referenced by the web app, but as far as I could tell this was not the case.
