hehe :) , facelets/jsf is sometimes just funny ... sorry can't really help you, a
dirty work around could be:

<c:if test="#{trialManager.elTest(elHelper.manager)}">
  | MADE IT!
  | </c:if>
  | 

don't even know if that would work for sure :\
