Are you sure you are running a 64-bit JVM? (Sorry if this question is naive, but I don;t had a Sparc system...) Try running "$JAVA_HOME/bin/java -version" and see what it says. When you say "it halts", what do you mean? JBoss AS goes through its shutdown process? JDK crashes? If the JDK crashes, you need to tell Sun - it's their JDK.
