I'm confused - are you trying to put ajax4jsf-1.1.x.jar in server/default/lib (DON'T do this) or in the WEB-INF/lib of your war project or in the WEB-INF/lib of your war inside a ear? The booking example in 1.3ALPHA demonstrates correct packaging for a Seam application using ajax4jsf running in AS 4.2.0.GA - give that a go and see if it works.
