I tried a third Mac and it worked. Going back to the other two Macs I discovered they had some files in the Java Extensions directories (/Library/Java/Extensions and ~/Library/Java/Extensions) that were causing the problem. When I removed all the files from these directories the jboss portal 2.4 would deploy successfully.
