Thank you for your response. The problem got resolved. Yes the class and referenced classes were in the path. On debug I noticed it was finding the class but then throwing an error. I had used 7-zip to delete the log4j.jar from the war. This must have corrupted the file somehow. Once I created a new war and ear using jar commands it worked.
