[JBoss Portal] - Can we Connect Jboss portal to Database other than hibernet - jboss-user

I m using Jboss portal + jboss AS 2.7.1
and hsql as database.

my doubt is Can i connect HSQL DataBase From Portal program not using Hibernet also...
or it is compulsory to use Hibernet...

Please suggest me...
I m new to Jboss portal programming..
