OK, so you are saying that you cannot change the code so that it will work with IE (does that code that generated the id with a colon belong to some third-party library you cannot change?) and you cannot complain to Microsoft because the complaint will fall on deaf ears. Therefore, the only other solution I can think of is to require all of your users to use FireFox. (Hey, I know of dozens of web sites that won't work unless you use IE - it's time for some payback! ;-) Wild idea: a valve that converts xxx:yyy to xxx_yyy on output and back to xxx:yyy in input.
