I believe the instructions say to run ant in the seam directory to build Seam itself. According to your message, you ran plain ant in an examples directory, building the non-tomcat version of the app. Then you build the tomcat version on top of the non-tomcat version. Some of the non-tomcat deployment descriptors were not re-built for tomcat because the build system didn't see them as old.
