Clebert, Tim, Thanks for your detailed responses. So I understand how to deal with database persistence. The only question that remains is how I should configure the JMS piece. Drop MDBs/JCA/JTA? (since that is turning out to be slow too.) But, replace it with what? My own connection/session/consumer/producer pools or some off-the-shelf framework? Looking forward to your response.
