In MyFaces you would need to either extend the MyFaces JspViewHandlerImpl or at least look at what it does to handle portlets. Since you are using Sun's JSF impl I don't know what is needed. You should probably try Sun's mailing list. In the future, you will be able to use a JSR-301 JSF Portlet bridge. That one should be more straightforward.
