Ok, thanks. I know I should have caught this sooner. I had read that the s:button does not submit the form in the docs. I guess I assumed that the s:button would still send the form fields to the server using request parameters. This led me to believe that server side validation would still happen. Another problem I had earlier is that I assumed that the s:button was just an extended version of the h:commandButton, but that is not the case. Thanks for you help.
