Thanks for the reply. When I read it I thought this may be the answer. But, it was not. I have since realized this additional info is relevant: It is an ear deployment that contains my jar and war file (now listed in that order in application.xml) The war file contains no classes, all are in the jar. There is a Seam class that is annotated with @Startup and it tries to lookup the SLSB which fails. I can clearly see in the log that the SLSB is successfully installed before the problematic Seam component load starts. In the log output the jndi name is what I expect.
