It's currently really just an internal method of doing chaining of converters. You could write a support component, that reaches up into the parent UIInput, grabs the converter, checks if it is a ConverterChain, and then runs the addConverter method if it is. File a feature request in JIRA if you like for a better way to use the converter chain (its the first request I've seen).
