could be the task server is not running on port 5445,
the demo task server in jbpm 5.3 full installer is running on MinaTaskServer with port
9123.

If it's trying to connect on port 5445 then likely the jbpm-human-task-war.war file
has been deployed by the installer. You are correct, the demo task server can also be
started instead of deploying the war file by using ant start.human.task which runs on port
9123 by default. I ran into this issue and classes used by the client code may need to be
changed depending on which server is used.

I have confronted the problem same as you descripted above. I discover the problem is the
ant install.demo fetch the incompleted package,
even if the message shows download successfully.
I delete the whole package and extract the jbpm-5.3.0.Final-installer-full.zip again.
to run.
1. ant install.demo
after successful download.
2. ant start.demo
It works and the precedence port 5445 error disappear.

you tell me which files and file folders in "jbpm-installer" and how much bytes
they have?
