Might have to do with the version of the tutorial, you are using. I guess you are using the latest version " J2EE 1.4 Tutorial Update 7 (for Sun Java System Application Server Platform Edition 8.2) January 27, 2006 ". This version does not deploy on JBoss 4.0.x (ends up with bean verifier errors). The version that works for JBoss 4.0.x is " J2EE 1.4 Tutorial Update 2 (for Sun Java System Application Server Platform Edition 8 Update 1) June 22, 2004 " which can be found at http://java.sun.com/j2ee/1.4/previous_downloads.html .
