For example, maybe you use the same page to edit a booking as when you create a new booking. In this case, you don't want the param to be required: <page view-id="/booking/editBooking.xhtml"> <param name="bookingId" value="#{bookingController.booking}" converter="#{bookingConverter}" required="false"/> </page> Currently, this will not work - you get a validation error.
