No idea how you store user profiles/preferences, but if you have a User table with an
"EMAIL_ADDRESS" column couldn't you just add a
"VISIBLE_EMAIL_ADDRESS" column that's blank if the user doesn't want
their email address shown? That would keep the database queries running at the same speed.
But I'm curious why adding one more join (I'm guessing?) to a small preferences
table would kill performance...?
Allow user to hide email address from normal uers if they don't
want it showing up
