Additionally, I just checked the Liferay and Pluto PortletContextImpl classes and PortletContext.getAttribute(String) simply wraps ServletContext.getAttribute(String). According to the JavaDocs for PortletContext, "The portlet context leverages most of its functionality from the servlet context of the portlet application."
