ucase and lcase on Microsoft MSSQL fail with the error :

- Teiid can't provide the CLI to clear the cache, JDG already does this well, we do not need to duplicate it.
- OpenShift the deployment of the new VDB means, restart of the image so yes, resource-adapter and translator both are loaded again. I am not sure how the caches are cleared here.
- In non Open Shift, if cache is cleared, just re-deploy of the VDB is needed as the on redeployment the translator should register the new .proto

There are 2 things that have to happen when the schema is changed:
* jdg cache needs to be cleared to remove existing data based on old schema
* teiid resource-adapter has to be restarted (timing will be important)
In openshift, running a cli script could be problematic for users, not that it can't be done. Before deploying the new vdb version, use the exsting VDB to perform "Delete * from tablename". Deploy VDB, then restart resource-adapter.

Resolution: Done
Updated the touch logic so that the item is always en queued. This highlighted several places in the temptable/stree logic that relied upon referencing the values coming from a non-evicted batch. Also added defensive logic to the buffermanager cleaner and more assertions to catch situations like these in development.

I wouldn't resort to removing the functionality. I would provide user enough information to be able to plan for this issue and handle it.
If there's a cli script (or sth like this) which can be run against JDG to clear the cache, than this I would consider sufficient documentation effort.

Teiid only claims this in INTERNAL materialization. Yes I agree in this Teiid provides some convenience methods, it does not mean we "manage" fully.
[~jstastny] In that case the only reliable option I can provide right now is not to register the .proto file at all. That means either user needs to work with the registered .proto file as before or provide a .proto file in the translator to register with. No DDL to .proto will be supported, we can comment that code out. Alternatively, we can document that schema evolution is not supported, which we did not with the previous version either.

With postgres we don't expect Teiid to change the schema, because Teiid didn't create it in the first place. There you're describing what you have in the source db.
With this new approach to JDG integration, we're creating and managing the schema, user didn't do anything else than writing Teiid's DDL.
So that's why I feel we need to handle this (either documentation or implementation effort).

In a development environment, the expectation would be the cache will be cleared. As for production, the user has to decide if the data is to be kept. For (external) materialization use cases, I think the current expectation would be to clear the cache. However, for using as a data source, the user would have to decide how to migrate the data. Which would entail creating a new cache and moving/transforming the existing data into the new cache (schema format).
