[JBoss JIRA] (TEIID-5643) When querying a larger dataset, teiid answers with 504 Gateway Time-out and throws exception

Hello Steven,
ok, now I have things set up. Easier it cannot become. A "docker-compose up -d" should give you the exactly same environment I have running at home. I assume the Docker way is the best one to share topics. Looks like this will be not the last time we are discussing Teiid issues :)
Ok, regarding the performance topic: You did the performance analysis, hence I have nothing to add. So we leave it like it is.

> Please note, I am using Teiid 11.2.0 and not 11.2.1 as specified above in this ticket. I was not able to select a version 11.2.0.
> The issue: I tried to query a table with a larger amount of records (about 600.000 records in the table). Teiid responds with
> 504 Gateway Time-out. The server didn't respond in time.
> If Teiid tries to respond with 600.000 entries to such a request, it is reasonable that it runs out of memory or other weird things happen. However, I would expect that in such a case Teiid just answers with a fixed amount of records, say for example 1000, and provides a kind of curser to enable subsequent requests to retrieve more data.
> I am currently trying to find a workaround for the issue, as the issue blocks my work. Is there maybe a kind of configuration option that I have to set explicitly for such a kind of behavior I previously sketched?
> Further note: When I send such a kind of select * request on the table to Teiid, I am also not able for a certain time interval, about a minute, to get a responds to different queries which select a single element on the mentioned table. Such a request then also results in a 504 Gateway Time-out.

[JBoss JIRA] (TEIID-5643) When querying a larger dataset, teiid answers with 504 Gateway Time-out and throws exception
by Christoph John (Jira)
Christoph John commented on TEIID-5643:
---------------------------------------
Hello Steven,
ok, now I have things set up. Easier it cannot become. A "docker-compose up -d" should give you the exactly same environment I have running at home. The entire configuration of Teiid is done in ./teiid/Dockerfile via the Wildfly console. The README.txt describes everything. Please let me know if it is working for you or you do have questions regarding getting things going.

[JBoss JIRA] (TEIID-5643) When querying a larger dataset, teiid answers with 504 Gateway Time-out and throws exception
by Steven Hawkins (Jira)
Steven Hawkins commented on TEIID-5643:
---------------------------------------
> I am not sure what you mean. An additional ticket to implement paging without loading the full batch with the first page request? Well, this sounds nice. So would you implement that?
The current behavior is to cache the full OData request results, then page in the engine. It sounded from your previous comment that you expected the paging to be pushed down - that would be new behavior. I'm experimenting with what the performance characteristics of that would look like. There is of course less temporary data for Teiid to deal with, which is better if you are running into issues with cache eviction or need a very constrained Teiid instance. However even just simple access to a single source will take more time as multiple push down requests. If there is any additional work, such as a federated query or that there isn't an ordered primary key index, then pushing down the paging will take substantially more time. So it's probably not worth capturing something at this time.
> I am not 100% clear if my description above is what you meant and would be meaningful enough for a ticket.
If there is anything that you can do to simplify your scenario and still provide a reproducing case that would be great. Can you try the same scenario not in a docker container? What about just using the loopback translator for data, etc.?

by Steven Hawkins (Jira)
Steven Hawkins resolved TEIID-5592.
-----------------------------------
Resolution: Done
Merged Van's pr and made additional changes to the quickstart readme's and teiid.io to clarify things further.
> Update or deprecate teiid-quickstarts

> Key: TEIID-5592

> Fix For: 12.2

> The last update to the quickstarts was for Teiid 10 - which should have been largely compatible with Teiid 11. However this should be reviewed and updated for Teiid 11 - or we should deprecate them and update teiid.io appropriately.

[JBoss JIRA] (TEIIDSB-27) Created targeted documentation

> It's expected that all developer oriented aspects will be self documented with javadoc and examples (udfs, pom options, configuration, custom extensions, etc.). However the Teiid ddl, sql - and in particular the presentation of topics that were presented separately such as data roles - need to be covered by documentation that does not reference topics such as Designer, wildfly/cli, xml vdbs, etc. We should probably also discuss if it makes any sense to still offer the local adminapi.
> We expect to receive some input from the documentation group around doc structure and strategies for generating specific documentation sets off of a master. At a high level we have:
> Administrator’s Guide - WildFly specific and should mostly be replaced by examples
> Caching Guide - References adminapi, Teiid JDBC, xml vdbs..
> Client Developer’s Guide - Teiid JDBC
> Developer’s Guide - References WildFly and several arche-types are specific to WildFly/JEE - should mostly be replaced by examples
> Embedded Guide - Should mostly be replaced by examples
> Reference Guide - References XML vdbs
> Security Guide - WildFly specific and should mostly be replaced by examples, but a lot is TDB
