We have recently upgraded to teiid 7.6 on our environment, and we have noticed that a few
users have been reporting problems querying data via JDBC surrounding blobs/clobs.
The fields in the VDB model are marked as MEDIUMTEXT, but when trying to run an example
query such as

select bug_id, keywords from bugzilla.bugs order by bug_id limit 1000;
{noformat}
In squirrel you just get the values back as <Clob> (not the real value) and in
dbvisualiser you get back CLOB in the field with the following errors

Is there an error in squirrel, or just dbvisualizer? That exception is coming from
javax.sql.rowset.serial.SerialClob and we'd need a stacktrace to better determine why
it's happening.
With the next problem, if you have a source type of mediumtext it should map to a teiid
clob. By default a teiid clob is a non-comparable type. Teiid 8 adds support for
comparable lobs - see TEIID-1834.

I can look at getting you a stacktrace. On dbvisualiser it gives the error above, on
squirrel it just gives the fields back as <CLOB> without their real value.
I assume this all just means we actually chose the wrong field type MEDIUMTEXT to
represent this data. Is there a type we can use instead that allows string comparisons and
comes back as datatype string instead of clob?

In most versions of squirrel you can click on the <CLOB> value to see the actual
text.
Your source datatypes are up to your needs. MEDIUMTEXT represents up a character string
with up to 2^24 characters, thus we map it to clob on the chance that the driver can
provide us a memory safe representation. If you choose to represent it with a Teiid
string, it may be limited to 4000 characters depending on how it's
retrieved/manipulated.
TEIID-1834 can be a candidate for back-porting to 7.7 if needed.

If we can get TEIID-1834 into a 7.X stream it would be much appreciated as I think we will
need to be on 7.X for a while (until EAP 6 lands) and this feature is going to be needed.

That stacktrace does not originate in Teiid. Can you find the corresponding log on the
server side?
We'll be posting a 7.7 CR1 shortly. I'll make sure that the comparable lob logic
gets into 7.7.

users have been reporting problems querying data via JDBC surrounding blobs/clobs.
The fields in the VDB model are marked as MEDIUMTEXT, but when trying to run an example
query such as

Ah, I see it now. SerialClob has a bug in their substring method when the clob length is
zero. It will probably be easier to check for that on our end rather than waiting for a
JRE fix...
