Hi Andy, thank you for response. Unfortunatly your suggestion not bring the desired result. On hibernate forum I found that absence Serializable can cause the problem, but the BaseEntity class that extends Person class implements serialisation. OK found the following so far. Think I've got to the bottom of the ClassCastException tho I'm still not sure whether The @Startup annotation means that the Component.newInstance() gets called at the end of the seam initialisation which creates a mapping of "referenceSessionFactory" -> Component( referenceSessionFactory ) in the application context/scope. Unfortunately when the ManagedHibernateSession comes to evaluate #{referenceSessionFactory} the JSF (RI) ScopedAttributeELResolver gets in first and returns the value in the application scope which is the component itself, rather than the unwrapped SessionFactory. Not sure why this only happens when the @Create method is being called. I found that outside the @Create method then the SeamVariableResolver gets first go at resolving the "referenceSessionFactory" and presumably does the proper unwrapping. Is this VariableResolver perhaps not enabled until after the @Create method is called? I'll continue looking around. Cheers. Mike. Not sure if this applies here, but I read somewhere in the documentation that you should not use portal with the installer version of application server, but rather download the zipped version, as the portal and installer version of app server are not yet "aligned". I noticed your path to your app server is: "C:\Program Files\jboss-4.0.3SP1", whicih suggess that you used the installe. Maybe try downloading the latest zipped version of the application server. I just have with the portal 2.4.1 and it all seems fine. However, I had some problems with MySQL5.0, so rather go with MySQL 4. [JBoss Portal] - How to configure the portal from code

Hi, I have a portlet application and want to automate the installation. Besides the deployment of the portlets, I want to configure some users and roles and I want to provide pages that display the portlets. Is there any API that I can use to configure the Portal? Or can I insert this information in the database? All information, or are pages stored in the filesystem? Where? I searched in the reference manual but didn't find anything. Today what you want is not possible anymore due to the issue I explained before (portlets may be deployed before the -object.xml file). However it is possible to do it programatically using the services I explained before. What could be possible is to have the insertion of XML files using JMX, on each MBean representing a portlet container, you could ask it to try to create the related instances. Same would apply for portal objects.
