I have a striped lock manager in 3.x (currently in dev, alpha soon out) which can potentially be backported to 2.2.X. This will limit the locks created and the corresponding overhead. If you think you can wait for 3.x (should be released in a couple of months, with alphas and betas in the coming weeks) then great. Otherwise, raise a JIRA to backport this striped lock manager to 2.2.X. and it could be in 2.2.1 as an option. I have only used the new JAX-WS based web services as offered in 4.2.x, I never used web services before that. I do not know if you can bring your web services forward, or if you will have to reimplement them. You will, at minimum, probably have to regenerate the stubs using wstools. [EJB 3.0] - .. problems with clob's and oracle (ojdbc14_g)

Your observations are correct, this is the classical concurrency issue and it is not an easy issue to solve. What you can at least do is declare each variable as a local one. Then they will be stored purely related to the token *first*... in a second step you can update the variable on a higher level after checking differences and you can always find all data back. (you also could do this via the logging mechanism since each update is logged) Hibernate locking will not solve this, maybe hibernate versioning can in some way (but you'd have to know the initial version somewhere). Normally we store as many data as possible in our own domain model and use processvariables for kind of fixed data like the businesskey. Ronald, At this moment, those tasks are not really part of a process (ok, technically they are ... they get started and when they are done, that workflow branch is over). They are created during the application... eg. you don't finish an email -> a 'send email task' is created. It can be seen as a seperate task, not bound to any real process. And that is my question : how should this be done ? How can you model these kind of tasks ... do you actually need a workflow for this or is there some other standard way of dealing with this kind of 'reminder' tasks. Dieter, I totally miss your point.... the task he already started on stays visible in his list *in the case he/she does not finish it* . You could order the tasklist by priority first and started/not started second. So they just stay in his list...
